How to Breed Sheep in Minecraft?

Minecraft is an exciting and addicting game because it tries to replicate reality as much as it can. Its building mode allows you to build realistic objects just as houses, ships, etc and its three dimensional gameplay provides you with coordinates and world map to traverse into. The objective over here is to make the game as immersive as possible. For that purpose it has a wide range of mobs that are based on real-life animals such as pigs, cows, horses, mules, llamas, and many more. Amongst them are sheeps which are one of the most well-known mobs in the game. You can find sheeps in almost any grass related biome. The purpose of this article is to understand how to breed sheep, however, let us first look at sheeps in Minecraft generally and understand their use and purpose, after that we can discuss how to breed sheeps in Minecraft.

Sheeps in Minecraft

Sheeps usually roam around in groups of two and three when the light level is seven or higher. In the Minecraft gameplay sheeps are one of the best sources for acquiring wool and meat. There are a total of 16 different sheeps in the game and since the majority of them are white you have the option to dye your sheep into any colour that you wish. There are two ways of dyeing your sheep in Minecraft. The first is to right click on the sheep with the dye in your hand and the second is to dye two sheeps with primary colours and then breed them to produce an offspring with a third different colour. For example, red and yellow sheep will create an orange offspring. Moreover, there are also grey, grey and black, and brown sheeps available in the Minecraft game however they are very rare to spot. Even more rare are pink sheeps who have a 0.164 percent chance of spawning naturally in the game.

How to Breed Sheep in Minecraft

If you are playing the Java edition then four sheeps may spawn above grass when the light level ranges between nine or higher – even in snowy areas. However, if you’re playing the Bedrock edition then you’ll find that two to three sheep spawn during the world generation on grass blocks when the light level ranges between seven or higher. These sheeps do not spawn in snowy areas, snowy plains, ice spikes nor wooded badlands.

Sheeps in Minecraft, like all the other mobs, are accustomed to ‘dropping’. Those sheeps who have grown their wool drop wool of the colour that they’re present in as well as meat. If you kill a sheep with fire or underwater using a sword with fire then you receive cooked meat. Killing the sheep will also reward you with upto three experience points. You should note that killing a baby sheep does not give you any experience points nor any wool or meat.

In Minecraft sheeps behave like normal sheeps. They wander around aimlessly in packs of four or alone. They avoid cliffs and dangerous areas if it causes them to yield damage. If they are harmed then they instinctively run away from the source of that harm however they do not make any special attempt at avoiding wolves or running away from them. In addition, you can use a tamed wolf to hunt a sheep for you and bring back its wool and meat.

Furthermore, like normal sheeps, sheeps in Minecraft grave on grass block and turn them into dust blocks. Baby sheeps are seen to graze glass block more often than adults. Minecraft sheeps can eat through glass blocks that are less than a full block thick. After a sheep is grazed off its wool it needs grass to regrow its wool. If the sheep is unable to graze on glass then its wool will not regrow.

As mentioned above, sheeps can be dyed using dyes in Minecraft. The process of doing this is simple, press the use key while holding a dye in your hand and you will see that dye being applied on the sheep. If you take the wool of a dyed sheep then the wool is the colour of the dye rather than original white.

Now that you know all about sheeps in Minecraft, let’s go ahead and discuss how to breed sheeps in Minecraft.

How to Breed a Sheep in Minecraft?

Since the beginning of the game breeding a sheep has been the most common thing in the Minecraft gameplay. So how do you do it? Let’s see:

In order to breed a sheep you are going to need two sheeps and some wheat items. You can get wheat from either farming wheat on your own or from wheat farms already present in the village. If you want to make your own farm then you can do so by digging up tall grass to get seeds and using hoe to fertilise dirt. Once the dirt is fertilised you can then plant the seeds that you obtained from tall grass. If you wait for some time you will notice wheat growing from the seeds that you planted. The next thing that you must do is to harvest this wheat and feed it to the sheeps that you intend to breed.

Before you begin to breed your sheeps make sure to build a farm so that the sheeps don’t go traversing around and so that you have all your sheeps in one place. It can get hard to get all your sheeps together when you want, which is why building a farm and storing your sheep in that farm is a great idea. Remember to create a wooden fence boundary in your farm as sheeps are unable to jump over them. You can make this fence wall from a lot of materials such as cobblestone and wood planks.

Next, in order to get your sheeps into your farm you are going to have to lure them in. A second option is to tie a leash but this will restrict you to one sheep at a time. If you decide to lure them in then there is a possibility that other sheeps will follow. For luring sheeps into your farm simply hold wheat in your hands and get close to the sheep, once the sheep notices the food item start walking towards your farm and you will notice the sheep follow you.

At last, you can feed wheat to the sheep by right clicking on the animal. Once the sheep has been fed you will see a heart icon appear around the sheep which indicates that the sheep is ready to mate. Your task is to feed wheat to two sheeps standing close to each other so that they mate together and produce a baby sheep in return.

Breeding sheeps is one of the easiest things to do in Minecraft. If you are playing survival mode then breeding sheeps is an easy way to get more sheeps into your farm. You can then use these sheeps for wool and meat. If not, then you will have to wait for a long time for the sheeps to breed naturally and produce offspring.

Conclusion

Minecraft is fun because it has close ties with reality. You can do things in Minecraft that you can do in real life and that is what makes the game so appealing. So the next time you decide to play this game make it a point to gather a few sheeps together and try out the breeding exercise!
