Minecraft is a game that is inspired a lot from the real world. For that purpose Minecraft has created several things in its gameplay that almost resembles the real world, such as creating animal mobs like sheep and horses which can breed together in order to give birth to children. Similarly, providing enough tools to the players in order to help them build things and objects that are found outside in the real world like houses and ships. Likewise, giving you the option to eat food so that you don’t die in the game.

The food option in Minecraft was introduced a while back. The creators of the game wanted to introduce a challenge so they introduced the players to food and to making their avatars eat in the Minecraft gameplay. Simply put, if you don’t eat then you lose energy, if you lose energy then you won’t be able to perform actions such as running. Once your energy is depleted you begin to lose health points. When your health bar is depleted you die. Of course, you wouldn’t want that, which is why knowing how to eat food in Minecraft is very important.

However, before we can understand how to eat food let us take this time to understand the mechanics of food in Minecraft, how it works and what are its uses. Let’s go!

How to Eat Food in Minecraft?

Food in Minecraft

Food in Minecraft refers to any consumable item that can restore your hunger points and your hunger saturation points. Having food in Minecraft is essential as not having it will starve your character and eventually result in death. In Hard and Hardcore mode starvation damage itself can kill your character in a matter of minutes.

Remember that when your hunger bar is full you will not be able to consume more food. Unless you are playing the creative mode, in that mood you can consume food wherever you want. However, if your health bar is full then it is better to store extra food for times when you can’t find food and really need to restore your health.

Your food items can all be stacked in your inventory. You can stack them in any way you like. Although, food items such as stew, cakes, and milk cannot be stacked. You can either consume them instantly or you can refrain yourself from cooking them when your health bar is full.

You will have noticed that there are two different food statistics bars in Minecraft, the hunger level and the saturation level. The hunger level is visible on your screen whereas the saturation level is not visible to you. However, it is the first one to decrease when you perform any sort of action that requires energy. The only way you can know that your saturation level has completely depleted is when your hunger level begins to jitter on your screen. When that happens, eating food instantly gives you hunger and saturation points based on the food item that you’re consuming. Some food items can offer more saturation points while some food items offer less saturation points.

There is also a third thing called Nourishment Level in Minecraft. This is defined by the ratio of saturation to hunger. Remember that food with higher nourishment levels should be eaten when your hunger bar is already full. The most efficient use of food is to eat food with low nourishment to fill the hunger bar first and then to eat highly nourishing food to fill the saturation bar. Remember that eating nourishing food when your hunger bar is already low wastes more saturation points. Maximising your saturation bar increases the length of time until your character requires food again.

Some food items available in Minecraft include:

  • Apple
  • Potato
  • Bread
  • Cake
  • Beetroot soup
  • Carrot
  • Cooked chicken
  • Cooked mutton
  • Cooked rabbit
  • Cooked salmon
  • cookie

Etc.

Now that we understand the fundamentals of food in Minecraft as well as its importance, let us discuss the crux of the matter: how to eat food in Minecraft?

How to Eat Food?

Eating food in Minecraft is a simple process to understand and replicate. The first thing that you have to do is to find food. There are many animals in the Minecraft gameplay that will drop meat when you kill them, such as sheeps, rabbits, and cows. You can eat meat without cooking it, but remember not to eat chicken meat raw because that will give you food poisoning. In any case, it is better and more beneficial to cook meat before eating it.

Another option available to you is to fish for food. You can go to the ocean and use a fishing rod to fish for food. Salmon and Clownfish are safe to eat raw but Pufferfish will cause nausea and food poisoning.

If fishing or hunting for food doesn’t suit you then you can also harvest crops and eat that to restore your health bar and saturation. Crops and plants will drop food when harvested in Minecraft. There are some crops such as carrots, potatoes, and melons that can be consumed immediately whereas other crops such as pumpkins and cocoa beans you will have to craft before you can eat them.

Once you have your food items make sure that your hunger bar is not full, if your hunger bar is full then you will not be able to eat food. When your hunger bar begins to shake you will know that its level is decreasing. When that happens, open your inventory and drag the food item you want to consume towards the hotbar at the bottom. Press the hotbar number to select the food item and hold it in your hand. Then press and hold the use item button (usually right-click) until the food is completely eaten. When your avatar has eaten the food item in hand you will notice your health bar increase again.

That’s it, that’s how you eat food in Minecraft.
