Beacons are a helpful but expensive block that produces a brilliant beam of light into the sky. They were first encountered in Update 0.16.0. In their current condition, beacons are primarily utilized to supply surrounding players with potion effects such as Speed, Jump Boost, Haste, Regeneration, Resistance, or Strength.

Players frequently use beacons as a source of light because they emit a light source value of 15.

Beacon blocks can be used as light sources, emitting a level 15 of light. They melt snow and ice in the same way as other light sources do. Beacons in Bedrock Edition can also get wet while conducting Redstone power. Beacon blocks have two distinct roles when they are “activated”:

  • A landmark beam that reaches into the sky can be seen from a long distance.
  • Powers that provide status effects to players within a particular range.

How to Make a Beacon in Minecraft

If a beacon is triggered, it emits a vertical beam that extends from the beacon block all the way to the very top of the world.  The beam can be seen up to 1342 blocks distant in Java Edition. Regardless of how high the render distance is set, the beam in Bedrock Edition is only visible up to 64 blocks away.

Placing stained glass blocks (or stained glass panes) atop the beacon block can modify the color of the beam. The color of the beam changes depending on the color of the glass above it: the first block determines the color of the beam, while each subsequent block determines the color by averaging the red, green, and blue components of the current beam color and the color of the block. The color values are the same as for the dye in concern. Hardened stained glass and hardened stained glass panes can also be used for this. [Only in Bedrock and Education editions]

Because the mixing process is significantly simpler than that used in leather dyeing, a substantially wider portion of the sRGB space is accessible. Although tools that calculate combinations are also available, it is typically sufficient to merely experiment with stacking glass.

Beacon beams cannot pass through most blocks, however, they can pass through bedrock and portal frames (allowing beacons to be utilized in the Nether).

Once the beacon has begun to emit a beam, it can be fed one iron ingot, gold ingot, diamond, emerald, or netherite ingot to select the status effects that will be applied to players inside the beacon’s range. This is done via the beacon’s graphical user interface, which may be accessed by pressing use while staring at the beacon block. It makes no difference which item is fed into the beacon. The player selects an effect from the “Primary Power” section on the left and sets the item to be fed in the vacant slot in the GUI. The “Secondary Power” column on the right becomes active if the beacon is on a 4-level pyramid.

Depending on which level of the pyramid is no longer complete, effects deactivate or weaken, and the beacon deactivates totally if the pyramid is broken. The originally selected power returns when the pyramid is restored, and there is no need to use another item.

Available primary powers include Speed I, Haste I, Resistance I, Jump Boost I, and Strength I. The secondary powers are Regeneration I, and level II of the primary powers. Combining two different primary Level I powers is also possible. Despite the fact that both effects are active, only one of the two powers appears to be selected. [Only available in Java Edition]

The specified powers are applied to all players in range every four seconds for a total of nine seconds, plus two seconds per pyramid level. When powers are altered or a player moves outside the region of effect, the effects last 5–9 seconds, or 13–17 seconds if the pyramid is full.

The beacon impacts a square column-shaped area that stretches downward and out to each side at a range defined by the size of the pyramid base, as well as upward at a distance equal to that range + 384 blocks.

Now that you know about Beacon, let’s discuss making it.

Items required to make a Beacon

First of all, to craft anything in Minecraft, one requires a Crafting Table.

Making crafting tables is as simple as placing a block of wood in the 2×2 crafting area and cutting it into four wooden planks. These four wooden planks are re-positioned in the crafting area, creating a crafting table.

Tables for crafting can be put on the ground. They display a 3×3 grid that may be used to make several of the game’s items.

You can also find Crafting Tables in Villages.

To make a Beacon, you will need to combine the following materials in the Crafting Table:

  • One Nether Star

Last but not least, there’s the Nether Star. The Nether Star is an extremely uncommon item that can only be obtained by beating “Minecraft’s” most challenging boss, the Wither.

The Wither, unlike other opponents in “Minecraft,” cannot be found wandering around aimlessly. You must create the Wither from scratch, utilizing items found in the Nether.

  • Three Obsidian

At least three blocks of obsidian must be mined or acquired. And, unlike other rare ores such as diamonds, you can’t get it through bartering with villagers.

Obsidian is best discovered by mining it from the earth. Remember that you’ll need to have a diamond or netherite pickaxe to perform this; other equipment will simply break the obsidian and leave you with nothing.

By pouring water from a bucket into lava, you can make obsidian. Dig until you reach layer 11 in the Overworld or layer 31 in the Nether if you don’t have easy access to lava. Dig horizontally till you reach lava, then pour a bucket of water into the hole. You can also mine a passage for the two liquids to meet if you find lava and water close to one another. Just be careful: falling into the lava in Minecraft is a rapid death sentence.

  • Five Glass

You’ll need glass to craft Beacon. You can make glass out of the sand just as in real life. Sand can be found in the desert or on any seaside beach.

At least five sand blocks must be mined and transported to a furnace. To make glass, place them in a furnace with any form of fuel.

Directions to make Beacon

  1. When you have all the items, open the Crafting Table and drag the items there in the following fashion:
  • In the upper row of your 3×3 crafting table grid, place three Glass in all three columns.
  • In the middle row of your 3×3 crafting table grid, place two Glass in the first and last columns and one Nether Star in the middle column.
